How to move everything to a new phone

Updated September 27, 2026 · 1 min read

Before you start

  1. Back up the old phone: iCloud Backup (iPhone) or Google backup (Android).
  2. Know your passwords, especially your Apple ID or Google account and your email.
  3. Move your two-factor codes. If you use an authenticator app, transfer its accounts before wiping the old phone.
  4. WhatsApp: check its chat backup is up to date.

iPhone to iPhone

Turn on the new iPhone and hold it near the old one. Quick Start copies everything. Keep both phones plugged in.

Android to Android

During setup, choose Copy apps and data and connect the phones with a cable or over Wi-Fi. Samsung phones can use Smart Switch.

Switching between iPhone and Android

  • Android → iPhone: use Apple's Move to iOS app during iPhone setup.
  • iPhone → Android: use the setup wizard's option to copy from an iPhone, with a cable if you have one.

Afterwards

Check that your photos, contacts and messages arrived before you erase the old phone. See Wipe a device before you sell it.
