Lost or stolen phone: what to do right now

Updated September 27, 2026 · 1 min read

Right away

  1. Locate it. iPhone: go to icloud.com/find or use Find My on another Apple device. Android: go to google.com/android/find.
  2. Play a sound if it might be nearby.
  3. Lock it (Mark as Lost), so the lock screen shows a message with a number to reach you.

If it's stolen or gone for good

  1. Erase it remotely from the same page. Try to locate it first, because erasing can stop tracking.
  2. Call your carrier to suspend the SIM, so nobody can use your number to receive your verification codes.
  3. Change key passwords: email first, then banking and social media.
  4. Tell your bank if you use mobile banking or tap-to-pay.
  5. Report the theft to police and keep the file number for insurance.

Don't

Try to get it back yourself. Share the location with police instead.

Set this up now

Make sure Find My / Find Hub is turned on, and that you know your Apple ID or Google password without needing your phone.
