Privacy policy
Brad Does Tech ("I", "me") respects your privacy. This policy explains what personal information this website collects and how it's used, in line with Alberta's Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) and Canada's PIPEDA.
What I collect
- Contact form and chat: your name, email address, phone number (if you give it) and whatever you write in your message.
- Technical basics: like every website, the server records standard logs (IP address, browser type, pages visited) for security and troubleshooting. These are kept for a limited time.
- Visit statistics: so I can see which pages help people and fix what doesn't, I keep my own simple statistics: the pages you view, the website that sent you, your approximate location (worked out from your IP address), your browser, device and screen size, how fast pages loaded, how long a page was open and how far you scrolled, and whether you tapped things like the phone number. They are collected on this website only. Nothing is sold, and nothing is sent to advertising or analytics companies. Detailed records are deleted after about six months; only totals without personal details are kept longer. Known robots (search engines and the like) are recorded separately.
- Your browser: the chat stores a small private key in your browser's local storage so you can come back to your conversation. Two small first-party cookies (
bdt_vandbdt_s) tell me whether a visit is a return visit; they contain random codes, not your name or details, and are never shared. They are only used for visit statistics and you can refuse them with the cookie banner or the "Cookie settings" link in the footer, without losing anything on the site. No advertising or tracking cookies are used. Everything stored on your device is listed on the cookie policy page.
How I use it
Only to reply to you, provide the services you ask for, and keep records of our conversation. I don't sell, rent or share your information with anyone for marketing.
The Halloween map
If you add your house to the community Halloween map, the details you enter (house name, street address, map pin, description and photo) are shown publicly on the map. You choose to list it and can edit or remove it any time with your private link. An email address is optional; it's only used to send your link and Halloween reminders, and is never shown. If you plan a route, your starting point and location are saved only on your phone and never sent to me; to draw walking paths, the houses and your starting point are sent to OpenStreetMap's routing service. Map tiles also come from OpenStreetMap.
Candy Alerts: if you sign up for alerts, I keep your email address (after you confirm it), your mobile number (texts are sent through Twilio) or your browser's notification address, only to send Candy Alerts around Halloween. Every email has an unsubscribe link, you can reply STOP to texts, and phone notifications can be turned off on the map. Posting a Candy Alert shows that address publicly until the alert ends. The "beep when I'm near" option checks your location on your phone only.
Share our walk: if you choose to share your trick-or-treating walk with family, your phone sends its location to this website about every 20 seconds so the people you give the link to can see it. Only the latest position is kept, and it's deleted when you stop sharing or after 5 hours. Costume wall: photos you upload are checked before they appear, location data is removed from them, and you can delete your photo any time. Busy streets and live counts use an anonymous random code per visit and the house you're walking to; no location is collected for them.
Website monitoring and statistics for clients (Sonar and Beacon)
If you are a hosting or website client and I run Sonar (website health checks) or Beacon (visitor statistics) for your website, this section applies to that service.
- Sonar requests the public pages of your website, the same way any visitor's browser does, to see whether it is up and how fast it answers. It also checks your security certificate, your domain's renewal date, whether the site is hidden from search engines and your email setup (public DNS records), and once a month follows your site's own links to find broken ones. It never logs in, never tests for weaknesses and never changes anything on your website. It involves no visitor information. I keep the individual check results (time, result, response time) for 40 days and the daily summaries for as long as you are a client, so I can show you uptime reports.
- Beacon counts visits to your website without cookies. It does not store visitors' IP addresses: it keeps the pages viewed, the referring website, device type, the approximate place (city or region, worked out when the visit happens) and a code that changes every day, so a visitor can't be followed from one day to the next. If you connect Google Search Console, I also read the search terms and click counts Google already reports for your own website. I do not combine this with any other information about visitors.
- Who sees it: you, through your private report page and the emails and PDF reports I send to the address you gave me, and me. I don't sell or share it. To check from outside my own server, a Cloudflare account I control is given the list of website addresses to check, and returns only the result and response time.
- When service ends: I delete the check history and statistics I hold for your website, normally within 30 days of cancelling, unless you ask me to keep them. Tell me if you'd like a copy first.
Your website's own visitors: your website should say that it uses cookie-free statistics. I can give you a sentence to paste into your privacy page.
Service providers
This website is hosted on BDT Hosting servers run by Brad Does Tech. Emails may be delivered through a trusted email delivery service (such as SMTP2Go). Fonts are loaded from Google Fonts.
Device repairs
When you bring me a device, I only access the files needed to do the work you asked for. I don't copy or keep your personal files unless you ask me to (for example, to move them to a new computer), and any temporary copies are deleted when the job is done.
How long I keep it
Messages are kept as long as needed to help you and for reasonable business records, then deleted. You can ask me to delete your messages at any time.
Your rights
You can ask to see, correct or delete the personal information I hold about you. Email info@braddoestech.ca or call 403-616-7495.
