// Water: the watching side of BDT

Know when your website breaks, and what it does for you

Sonar checks your website every minute and tells me the moment something is wrong. Beacon shows who visits and what they do, with no cookies. A plain-English report lands in your inbox every month.

Fire hosts your website (BDT Hosting). Water watches over it. Both from a local Calgary person who answers the phone.

Two parts, one report

Sonar listens. Beacon shows the way.

Sonar

Is my website working?

  • Checked every minute, day and night, from two places
  • Told within minutes when it goes down, and I start fixing it
  • Warnings before your security certificate or domain name expires
  • A check that nothing is hiding your site from Google
  • Email set-up checked, so your messages do not land in spam
  • A private page with every outage and a PDF report for each

Beacon

Who visits, and what do they do?

  • People, pages, and where they came from (Google, social, AI assistants)
  • Phone, tablet or computer, and the town they are in
  • Calls, forms and bookings counted as goals
  • How fast your pages feel to real visitors
  • No cookies, no stored IP addresses, no consent banner
  • Your own dashboard, plus search terms from Google if you want them

How it works

You do nothing. I do the watching.

  1. 1I switch it on

A few minutes. No logins to your website for Sonar. Beacon is one small folder.

  2. 2It watches

Every minute, from a checker on my server and a second one outside it.

  3. 3I get the alert

If both agree it is down, I get a task, an email and a push notification.

  4. 4You get the story

A report with a PDF for any outage, and a monthly report for every month.

What you get

Plain English, not a wall of graphs

These are examples with made-up numbers.

Your website was briefly unavailable on September 17From Brad Does Tech · outage report

Your website was unavailable for 17 minutes, between 2:41 and 2:58 pm.

What happened. An update to one of your website's add-ons used up the server's memory, so pages showed an error.

What I did. I rolled the update back and raised the memory limit. The site came back and I checked that orders and the contact form still work.

What stops it happening again. Updates are now tested on a copy first.

Your website in September: 1,284 visitors, up 21%From Brad Does Tech · monthly report

Is your website working? It was up 99.95% of the time. Two short outages, both fixed the same day.

What visitors did. 38 people tapped your phone number, 24 started a pickup order, 17 opened the contact form.

One thing worth knowing. 61% of visits were on a phone, so how the site looks on a phone matters most.

Questions

Do you need access to my website?

No. Sonar only loads your public pages the way a visitor would, so there is nothing to log in to. Beacon (the statistics) is a small folder on your website with its own login, which I set up with you.

Does it slow my website down?

No. Sonar makes about one small request a minute, roughly the traffic of one extra visitor. Beacon adds a tiny script that loads after your page is already showing, and its work happens afterwards on my server.

Do I need a cookie banner for Beacon?

Not for the statistics. Beacon uses no cookies and does not store visitors' IP addresses, so it needs no consent banner. If you use other tools on your website (Google Analytics, ads, chat widgets), those are separate.

What happens when my website goes down?

Two checkers (one of them outside my own server) have to agree, then I get an alert right away with what to check. For an outage of any size you get a plain-English report with a PDF: what happened, what I did, and what stops it happening again.

What do I get each month?

An email with a designed PDF report: how often your website was up, any outages, how fast it was, and with Beacon, who visited, where they came from and what they did (calls, forms, bookings). Every report links to your private page where you can open any month.

Can I cancel any time?

Yes. Reply to any email. Your monitoring stops, and the statistics folder can be removed from your website.

Do I have to be hosted with you?

No. Sonar and Beacon work on any website, wherever it is hosted. On the top BDT Hosting plan they are included.

Sonar only requests your public pages, like any visitor. It never logs in, scans for weaknesses or changes anything on your website. Beacon counts visits without cookies and without keeping anyone's IP address. See the privacy page.
