Restart your modem and router the right way

Updated September 27, 2026 · 1 min read

Step by step

  1. Unplug the power from the modem and the router (if they're separate boxes).
  2. Wait 30 seconds. This fully clears their memory.
  3. Plug the modem in first. Wait 2–5 minutes until the internet/online light is steady.
  4. Plug the router in. Wait another 2 minutes.
  5. Test a website on one device.

One box or two?

Many providers supply a single box that's both the modem and the Wi-Fi router. Just unplug that one box.

Don't press Reset

The small reset pinhole erases all your settings, including your Wi-Fi name and password. Restarting means unplugging the power, not pressing reset.

Restarting all the time?

If you need to restart every week, something's wrong: an overheating box, old equipment or a line problem. Get it checked.
