How to change your Wi-Fi name and password

Updated September 27, 2026 · 1 min read

Find the settings

  • Provider equipment: use your provider's app (for example the Telus or Rogers app). It's the easiest way.
  • Your own router or mesh: use the maker's app (for example Eero, Google Nest, TP-Link Deco or Asus).
  • In a browser: type the router's address (often 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1) and log in with the admin password on its sticker.

Change them

  1. Go to Wi-Fi or Wireless settings.
  2. Change the network name if you like. Avoid your address or family name.
  3. Set a new password of at least 12 characters. A few random words work well, like maple-canoe-orbit-72.
  4. Choose WPA3 or WPA2/WPA3 security if it's offered.
  5. Save. Everything will disconnect.

Then

Reconnect your phones, laptops, TVs, printers and smart devices with the new password. Smart plugs and cameras sometimes need their own app to redo setup.

Tip: when you replace a router, keep the same network name and password and most devices reconnect by themselves.
