How to run an internet speed test properly

Updated September 27, 2026 · 1 min read

Do it right

  1. Use a cable if possible, plugged straight into the router. A Wi-Fi test measures your Wi-Fi, not your internet.
  2. Pause everything else: streaming, downloads, backups and game consoles.
  3. Use a well-known test such as speedtest.net, fast.com, or your provider's own tester.
  4. Test three times, at different times of day. Evenings are busiest.

Reading the results

  • Download: how fast things come in (streaming, browsing).
  • Upload: how fast things go out (video calls, sending files, backups).
  • Ping (latency): the delay, in milliseconds. Under 30 ms is great; over 100 ms feels laggy on calls and games.

What's normal?

Getting 80–95% of your plan's speed on a cable is normal. Consistently much less? Restart your modem, then contact your provider with your results. Screenshots help.

On Wi-Fi, getting 50–70% of your plan's speed is common, especially far from the router.
