How to choose an internet provider in Calgary
Types of internet, best to worst
- Fibre: the fastest and most reliable, with equal upload and download speeds. Telus PureFibre covers much of Calgary.
- Cable: fast downloads, slower uploads. Rogers (which took over Shaw) runs the cable network.
- 5G home / fixed wireless: a decent option where fibre and cable don't reach.
- Satellite (Starlink): the go-to for rural acreages. Much better than it used to be, but it costs more.
- DSL: old phone-line technology. Avoid it if you have any other option.
Questions to ask before you sign
- What's the price after the promo period? Many deals jump after 12–24 months.
- What's the upload speed? It matters for video calls, working from home and cloud backups.
- Is there a contract or cancellation fee?
- Is the modem/Wi-Fi equipment rented, and what does it cost?
- Is there a data cap? Most Calgary home plans are unlimited, but check.
Smaller providers
Many smaller Canadian providers resell the same Telus or Rogers lines for less. Speeds are usually the same, but support varies, so read recent reviews.
Tip
Before switching, call your current provider and ask for the "loyalty" or "retention" department. They'll often match a competitor's price.
