Should you repair or replace your computer?

Updated September 27, 2026 · 1 min read

Usually worth repairing

  • A slow computer that still has a hard drive (an SSD upgrade transforms it)
  • A worn-out battery, broken charger, keyboard or fan
  • Software problems: malware, or Windows needing a reinstall
  • A good-quality computer under about 5 years old

Usually time to replace

  • It can't run Windows 11 (Windows 10 support ended in October 2025) or a current macOS
  • The repair costs more than half the price of a comparable new computer
  • Motherboard failure on an older machine
  • It's too slow for what you do now, even after upgrades

Things to weigh up

  • Your data: moving everything to a new computer takes time, or a service fee
  • Software licences: older programs may not reinstall on a new machine
  • The environment: repairs keep electronics out of the landfill
