How to speed up a slow Windows computer

Updated September 27, 2026 · 1 min read

Free fixes

  1. Restart properly: Start → Power → Restart. (Shut down doesn't fully clear things on most Windows PCs.)
  2. Turn off startup apps: press Ctrl+Shift+Esc → Startup apps, and disable anything you don't need running all the time.
  3. Free up space: Settings → System → Storage → turn on Storage Sense and check Cleanup recommendations. Keep at least 15–20% of the drive free.
  4. Scan for malware: open Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Quick scan.
  5. Uninstall junk: toolbars, "PC optimizers" and trial software. Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
  6. Install updates for Windows and your web browser.

Hardware upgrades

  • SSD: replacing an old hard drive with an SSD often takes startup from minutes to seconds.
  • Memory (RAM): 8 GB is the minimum for Windows 11 today; 16 GB is comfortable.

Is it overheating?

Loud fans, a hot laptop base and slowdowns under load point to dust build-up. A professional clean-out helps a lot.
