Mailbox full? How to free up space fast

Updated September 27, 2026 · 1 min read

Find the space-hogs

  • Gmail: search larger:10M or has:attachment older_than:2y and delete what you don't need. Gmail's space is shared with Google Drive and Photos. Check it at one.google.com/storage.
  • Outlook.com: Settings → General → Storage shows what's using space.
  • Outlook on a computer: File → Tools → Mailbox Cleanup → find items larger than a size you choose.

Then

  1. Empty Deleted Items/Trash and Spam/Junk. Deleted mail still counts until it's emptied.
  2. Save important attachments to your computer or cloud drive, then delete the emails.
  3. Unsubscribe from newsletters you never read so it doesn't fill up again.

Business email at your own domain

Your hosting plan sets the mailbox size. If you're always full, ask your host about a bigger mailbox. It's usually cheap.
