Was your email in a data breach? How to check

Updated September 27, 2026 · 1 min read

Check

  1. Go to haveibeenpwned.com, a free, well-known breach-checking service.
  2. Enter your email address.
  3. It lists the breaches your email appeared in, and what was exposed (passwords, phone numbers, addresses).

You can also sign up there for alerts about future breaches. Password managers like Apple Passwords, Google Password Manager and Bitwarden warn you about exposed passwords too.

If you're in a breach

  1. Change the password for that site.
  2. Change it anywhere else you used the same password. This matters most.
  3. Turn on two-factor authentication, especially for email and banking.
  4. Watch for phishing. Criminals use breached details to make scams look convincing.

Don't panic

Most people's email is in several breaches. What matters is that you don't reuse passwords, and that you have two-factor on important accounts.
