Is public Wi-Fi safe to use?
The real risks
- Fake networks: a hotspot called "Airport Free WiFi" set up by someone nearby.
- Unencrypted sites: rare now, but anything without the padlock (
https) can be seen. - Sharing turned on: your laptop may share files on networks it treats as private.
Stay safe
- Confirm the network name with staff before joining.
- Look for the padlock and
https://in the address bar. - Use your phone's hotspot for banking or anything sensitive.
- On Windows, set it as a Public network: Settings → Network & internet → Wi-Fi → the network → Public.
- Turn off auto-join for networks you won't use again.
- Keep your devices updated.
What about a VPN?
A reputable VPN adds protection on public Wi-Fi, but it isn't essential for most people if you follow the steps above. Avoid free VPNs, which often make money from your data.
