Keeping kids safe online: a simple setup

Updated September 27, 2026 · 1 min read

Built-in tools

  • iPhone/iPad: Settings → Screen Time → set it up as a child's device. Control apps, downtime, purchases and content.
  • Android: the Google Family Link app, for app approvals, screen time and location.
  • Windows and Xbox: Microsoft Family Safety, for screen time, web filtering and spending limits.
  • YouTube: YouTube Kids for young children, and supervised accounts for older ones.
  • Your router: many routers and mesh systems can pause the internet or filter sites for the whole home.

Good habits

  • Keep devices in shared spaces, especially at night.
  • Know their passwords while they're young.
  • Turn on purchase approvals (Ask to Buy or Family Link).
  • Talk about not sharing photos, location or personal info, and make sure they know they can tell you if something online upsets them.

Games and chat

Check the chat settings in games like Roblox, Minecraft and Fortnite. They can limit who's able to message your child.
