Do you need to pay for antivirus?

Updated September 27, 2026 · 1 min read

Windows

Microsoft Defender (in Windows Security) is built in, free, and scores well in independent tests. Make sure it's on: Start → Windows Security → Virus & threat protection.

Mac

macOS has built-in protection too. Stick to the App Store and trusted developers.

When a paid product can make sense

  • You want extras like a password manager, VPN or identity monitoring in one bundle
  • You run a small business and want central management

What actually protects you

  1. Install updates for your operating system, browser and apps
  2. Use a password manager and unique passwords
  3. Turn on two-factor authentication
  4. Be careful with links and attachments
  5. Keep backups, so ransomware can't hold you hostage

Avoid

Pop-ups selling "PC cleaners" or "virus removal." And don't run two antivirus programs at once: they fight each other and slow everything down.
