Buying a laptop: what actually matters

Updated September 27, 2026 · 1 min read

The specs that matter

  • Storage: an SSD of at least 256 GB (512 GB if you keep photos on the laptop). Avoid "eMMC" storage.
  • Memory (RAM): 16 GB is the sweet spot. 8 GB is fine for light use. Avoid 4 GB.
  • Processor: any recent Intel Core Ultra or Core i5, AMD Ryzen 5, Snapdragon X or Apple M-series chip is plenty for most people.
  • Screen: at least 1920×1080 (Full HD). Look at it in person if you can, because a dim screen is the most common regret.
  • Battery: trust real-world reviews, not the maker's claim.

Windows, Mac or Chromebook?

  • Mac: excellent battery life and build, and it pairs nicely with an iPhone.
  • Windows: the most choice at every price, and it works with more business and gaming software.
  • Chromebook: great value for browsing, email and school, if you don't need Windows programs.

Save money smartly

  • Last year's model is often a great deal.
  • Business ranges (Lenovo ThinkPad, Dell Latitude, HP EliteBook) are sturdier than bargain models.
  • Check the manufacturer's warranty length before paying for an extended one.

Before you buy

Plan how you'll move your files across, and set up backups on day one.
